Many parts of the world, which once had large popluations and produced plenty of crops, have become deserts.... Air pollution comes from factories, power stations and cars. Chemicals in the smoke from power stations cause a lot of can travel hundreds of miles in the wind, before falling to the ground in the rain.... Water pollution is caused by waste from factories and cities. Oceans are able to clean themselves , but certain seas, once they become dirty, are not able to do so.... Many of the animals are dying out. It is thought that between the years1550 and1950 an average of one kind of living things died out each year. By1985this had risen to one per day. Between1980 and2000 we may lose another half a million different kinds of living : Activity1: Write the word/phrase which matches each description. The first letter of each word/phrase is given to help the students. The Ss should do this exercise individually. Check the answers with the whole class at the end of the activity. Activity2: Write true if the statement is true. If false, change the underlined term to make the statement true. The students should do this exercise individually. Check the answers with the whole class at the end of the activity. Activity3is an interview activity. The students are required to do in the following steps: 1. Read the report from a newspaper. 2. Divide the class into groups of four. Suppose one is a journalist from China Environment News. He is interviewing the other three about the event from the factory authorities, the local residents association, and the NEPA(国家环保总局). 3. Before the interview activity, the teacher gives each group the three cards which show what the three sides may say. (See teaching tips for activity3) 4. Start the interview activity within the group. 5. Choose one or two groups to report their activity to the whole class.
