  irecognizethatthemanyproclamationsfromstatecapitolsandfromwashington,thelegislation,thetreasuryregulations,andsoforth,couchedforthemostpartinbankingandlegalterms,outtobeexplainedforthebenefitoftheaveragecitizen.

  iowethis,inparticular,becauseofthefortitudeandthegoodtemperwithwhicheverybodyhasacceptedtheinconvenienceandhardshipsofthebankingholiday.

  andiknowthatwhenyouunderstandwhatweinwashingtonhavebeenabout,ishallcontinuetohaveyourcooperationasfullyasihavehadyoursympathyandyourhelpduringthepastweek.

  firstofall,letmestatethesimplefactthatwhenyoudepositmoneyinabank,thebankdoesnotputthemoneyintoasafedepositvault.

  itinvestsyourmoneyinmanydifferentformsofcredit--inbonds,incommercialpaper,inmortgagesandinmanyotherkindsofloans.
